Form Drag on Ocean Flows
Form drag is a central process linking rough topography to ocean mixing processes. The history of the measurement of form drag in the ocean and atmosphere is reviewed. The basic equations governing form drag and its role in energy conversion are derived for a Boussinesq fluid, focusing on the case of tidal flow. Observational and numerical results are shown for stratified, tidal flow near a hea...
متن کاملMultiscale modeling of incompressible turbulent flows
Developing an effective turbulence model is important for engineering applications as well as for fundamental understanding of the flow physics. We present a mathematical derivation of a closure relating the Reynolds stress to the mean strain rate for incompressible flows. A systematic multiscale analysis expresses the Reynolds stress in terms of the solutions of local periodic cell problems. W...
متن کاملA new scaling property of turbulent flows.
A new scaling property of turbulent flows. Abstract We discuss a possible theoretical interpretation of the self scaling property of turbulent flows (Extended Self Similarity). Our interpretation predicts that, even in cases when ESS is not observed, a generalized self scaling, must be observed. This prediction is checked on a number of laboratory experiments and direct numerical simulations.
متن کاملNear-wall Scaling for Incompressible and Compressible Flows
The paper presents near-wall scaling in incompressible and compressible flows. It concentrates on flows with streamwise pressure gradients which render traditional scaling inapplicable. For incompressible flows a scaling for the velocity profiles is introduced based on both the friction velocity and the pressure gradient. For compressible flows a scaling is developed for the velocity and the te...
متن کاملScaling laws for drag of a compliant body in an incompressible viscous flow
Motivated by an important discovery on the drag scaling law (the 4/3 power law) of a flexible fibre in a flowing soap film by Alben et al. (Nature vol. 420, 2002, p. 479) at high Reynolds numbers (2000<Re< 40 000), we investigate drag scaling laws at moderate Re for a compliant fibre tethered at the midpoint and submerged in an incompressible viscous flow using the immersed boundary (IB) method...
